The Community Club was set up in 1956 by Holland and Sullivan Township Councils to raise money for community projects. It has donated thousands of dollars over the years for Community Centre expenses and The Building Funds. The Garden Party has been the centre piece of their fundraising. This small group of volunteers have raised $19,172.97 so far for Williamsford Community Centre building fund.
The first Garden Party and Official Opening of the Williamsford Community Centre took place July 18, 1956. The Community Club has been successfully holding Garden Parties for 54 years.
In the beginning, all the food was donated by members and volunteers of the community. Seven to eight hundred people attended. Over the years, the meal has gone from being served to smorgasbord style as there are fewer volunteers.
This year there were more than 80 pies donated as well as macaroni and bean salad. The cabbage was donated and coleslaw made by volunteers. Because of the difficulty in transporting jellied salads to Desboro in the heat, the menu was changed this year.
A special thanks to all the volunteers, past and present who have kept this tradition alive.
With our new facility the tradition will continue and we look forward to 2011 for the 55th Annual Garden Party in our new Community Centre.
If you are new to the community, or have lived here for years and now have some extra time on your hands, the Community Club is a terrific way to become part of the community. For "new folks" in the community this event is definately a party (good food and entertainment for the whole family), but it is not held in a garden.
